
What a CFU Number Actually Measures
Two billion is the CFU count printed on the front of most gummy vitamins in the Target probiotic aisle, and for a long time I assumed a bigger number automatically meant a better bottle. It doesn't, and untangling why is really just an exercise in probiotic math, the same kind of label reading I now do with every bottle that lands on my kitchen table, the way I used to mark up a stack of book reports. Consider this the gut health basics lesson nobody hands you at the pharmacy counter: what that number is actually measuring, what it leaves out, and why strain matters as much as quantity.
CFU stands for colony forming units, a count of live bacteria able to grow into a colony under lab conditions. On the label, that number reflects what was counted at the moment the batch was manufactured, not what's still alive by the time you twist off the cap, and definitely not what survives long enough to matter once it's inside you. That's the piece most shoppers skip, and it's the whole reason two bottles can list wildly different numbers and still both be technically honest.
A PTA parent from school, Odessa Barnwell, emailed me not long ago with almost that exact question — why one bottle bragged about ten billion CFUs while a plainer-looking bottle only listed two billion, and which one she should trust. Odessa has been unable to handle even a chewable aspirin without gagging since she was a kid, so gummies are her only real option, which makes getting this math right matter more for her than it does for most people.
The Gut Isn't Counting the Same Way the Factory Did
That number on the front of the bottle is a snapshot, not a promise. Probiotic effectiveness is strain-specific: a label that just says "Lactobacillus" doesn't tell you which strain is inside, or whether that particular strain has ever been studied for the digestive outcome you're actually hoping for. The CFU count works the same way — it's counted at manufacture, not verified for what makes it through stomach acid and the rest of the trip to where it needs to land.
Most of this grading happens at my own kitchen table, where a small rotating tray of half-tested bottles takes up more room than the salt and pepper shakers ever did. I've started reading fine print under a strip light I mounted below the cabinets, because the overhead fixture in that kitchen washes out anything printed smaller than a headline.
Before gummies became my whole personality, I gave a daily kefir habit a real shot. The smell alone got me to quit after about two weeks, long before I'd have been able to tell whether it was doing anything for my stomach either way. That's the standard I hold every gummy to now: does it survive contact with real life long enough to find out if it works?
How Manufacturing Heat Thins the Herd
Manufacturers know all of this, which is exactly why some brands "over-stuff" a gummy with a huge CFU count to begin with. Making a gummy involves heat, and live bacteria generally hate heat, so a chunk of the colony dies off during production before the bottle ever reaches a shelf. Put ten billion in at the start and maybe two billion survive to the label date, which is a very different story than a brand that lists two billion because that's genuinely what went in.
Pop the cap on most of these bottles and you'll catch a faint whiff of fake berry before you've even tipped one into your palm — that artificial sweetness is doing a lot of work to disguise what's really a fairly rough manufacturing process for something alive. An astronomical CFU count on a gummy isn't automatically "extra strength." Sometimes it just means the process was harsh enough that the company had to overload the recipe to guarantee anything survived at all.
True quality isn't only the raw number, it's stability, whether the bacteria strain was chosen and protected well enough to survive the commute from factory to store shelf to your stomach. When I'm reading a label now, I look for any mention of stability testing or a protective coating technology. Without that, you're often paying for a graveyard of dead microbes dressed up in a sugary shell.
Reading Strain Codes Like a Report Card
Strains are the individual skill sets behind that CFU number. Most inexpensive gummy probiotics lean on a single strain, often something hardy like Bacillus coagulans. That strain can be a genuine high-achiever, but asking one strain to cover the entire job of gut support is like assigning a group project and having exactly one kid do the work — capable, maybe, but not built to cover the whole assignment alone.
On a label, look past the plain species name for a specific alphanumeric code sitting next to it. Lactobacillus rhamnosus on its own tells you almost nothing useful; Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG is a documented, traceable strain with actual research behind that exact code. The code is the credential. Without it, you're looking at a generic name that doesn't guarantee any particular result, no matter how official it sounds on the bottle.
My friend Frieda, who teaches down the hall and rolls her eyes at basically every "boost your gut" claim I bring to lunch, would tell you a label without strain codes is dressing up thin content behind a flashy cover — and honestly, she's usually right about that.
Is Three Strains Enough for a Passing Grade?
Three to five distinct, coded strains is roughly the passing grade I look for now. A single strain repeated on its own isn't a diverse enough education for a gut that has to handle everything from a stressful staff meeting to a questionable cafeteria casserole in the same week.
None of this is about prebiotics, to be clear: that's the fiber that feeds bacteria already living in you, as opposed to the live bacteria a probiotic is trying to add, and it's a different lesson for a different day. The Sugar Side of the Probiotic Math
Run the numbers on a typical two-gummy serving and it usually works out to about four grams of added sugar. That's not alarming on its own, until you multiply it across a month: four grams a day for thirty days lands you around 120 grams of sugar, which works out to roughly thirty sugar cubes, all to get a small dose of bacteria that may or may not have survived the trip to matter.

Fiber has its own separate math too, soluble versus insoluble, and digestive enzymes solve a completely different problem than probiotics do — both are worth understanding before you start stacking supplements on top of each other without a clear reason for each one.
A Grading Checklist for Your Next Label
So here's the actual checklist, kept to three things because you'll remember three easier than seven. Check that the strain names carry a specific code, not just a genus and species. Do the sugar math per gummy before you do the math per bottle. And treat any CFU count that sounds absurdly high as a possible manufacturing-heat red flag rather than an automatic badge of honor.
I keep an actual rubric taped to my fridge at this point, three columns: CFU honesty, strain codes, sugar grams.
